According my notes for today's lesson, formal letters have a lot of purposes and are normally addressed to somebody you are not familiar with or business. Formal letters are used to make enquiries, give compliments and complaints, responding to queries but mainly its purpose and audience may also cause the main usage of the letters to change because of the audience and purpose.
